Canoeing

Yesterday we went canoeing down a 9km section of the Orb river. We drove up to the drop off point with our canoes, and set off. We soon found that going through rapids was no easy task, as Evan and I got stuck on rocks twice, and Jennifer and Declan ran aground and then tipped over. It took a long time for us to rescue the canoe and for Jennifer and Declan to swim to shore.

The gorge we were going through was beautiful. Every now and then we saw an old building or bridge, and the occasional bit of rock that had the reflection of the water underneath. The gorge twisted this way and that, so I had no idea where we were going (not that I payed any attention ).

We had to steer through the rapids carefully, but quickly to avoid running aground. I knew that rapids occurred because of shallow water. So we avoided white water and bits where the water suddenly went down, because they were dangerous. Occasionally we stopped to take pictures of the magnificent scenery. We stopped to have lunch, then kept on going.

In the second half of our canoeing, the rapids got trickier. We ran aground twice which led us to being infested by flies. I got through most of the rapids because of my knowledge of rapids. When we finally got back to our start, we had bruised backs and aching muscles, but the canoeing was still awesome.
